Student's room

Properly chosen furniture will help the child maintain health, and parents keep their nerves.

Before the new school year begins, parents and their children diligently prepare for school — buying backpacks, notebooks, and uniforms, and also, importantly, setting up the future student’s study area. The last point is especially important for first graders, as psychologists believe that a six-year-old's success and productivity directly depend on whether their workspace is properly equipped.

Designer Yulia Ostrovska shares insights on how a first grader's room should be arranged.

What should the desk be like?
For a first grader, the desk should be chosen very carefully, as its size and model will impact the child's posture, eyesight, and, importantly, their desire to study. There are several strict rules regarding desk sizes. The height depends on the child's growth: a first grader will need a desk height of 45-48 cm, while a teenager needs a "grown-up" desk – no less than 60 cm. In general, when going to buy a desk, take your child with you. The desk is perfect if its edge is level with the child's chest (this allows them to rest their elbows comfortably), their knees do not touch the underside of the tabletop, and their feet are placed at a 90-degree angle. The depth of the working surface should be at least 60-80 cm, and the width 100-140 cm. To avoid having to change the desk every two to three years, it's better to choose a transformable model that will "grow" with the child. The best place for the desk is to the left of the window, either side-facing or turned towards the window. The first option is convenient as the child is less distracted by street events, while the second allows for good daylight illumination of the workspace.

What should the artificial lighting in the room be like? To prevent the child from becoming tired, light sources should be combined. For example, compact fluorescent lamps for general lighting work well with halogen or regular lamps that provide directed light for the work area. Designers recommend a combination of wall-mounted sconces or a light cornice with reflected light, along with a separate light directly above the workspace. A desk lamp alone is strictly contraindicated for children! If the rest of the room is dimly lit, the contrast created will quickly tire the child and even worsen their eyesight.

How to choose the right chair for the child to sit at the desk? Ideally, it should be a comfortable work chair with adjustable seat height and backrest position, for example, the Y-317 and Y-818 models. This way, the chair can "grow" along with the child. The seat should not be too deep so that the child doesn’t slouch or lean back during lessons. Before buying furniture, you need to think about where stationery, books, notebooks, and other items will be stored. You can use cabinets like BD-C7R, pull-out drawers BD-MP01, shelves BD-P7G, panels with pockets for pens and pencils BD-P7S, and backpack stands BD-P8. The key is to ensure that the child can easily reach all these shelves and compartments, so they can quickly learn to organize and maintain order independently.
